Matched
by Ally Condie

Fantasy is still stirring up the young adult marketplace and Matched is a compelling addition, landing in November from Dutton. You may have already heard the buzz about this title, the first in a dystopian trilogy – there has been a steady discourse on blogs and in reviews for a few months. Normally I wouldn’t bring it up again, but I think this one has real star power for fall. The plot is straightforward: the Society makes all decisions for the citizens in Cassia’s country, from school to occupation to one’s match in the marriage contract. A strange twist in Cassia’s match sparks her imagination, and she realizes that she wants to control her own destiny. The book is romantic without being vulgar, tender without being treacly, and excitingly unsettling without being gruesome. As a former bookseller, I can tell you that this will be a great handsell to anyone who needs a book for a young adult this fall. Oh, and you may want to reread "Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night" to be in the right frame of mind before reading Matched.

Teens’ appetites for paranormal fantasy and dystopian cautionary tales are as voracious as ever, especially for their favorite series.  Everyone is waiting with bated breath for the final installment of the Hunger Games trilogy, Mockingjay, available on August 24th.  After your teens devour it, and they’re still hungry for more thrills, try them out on Patrick Ness’s dystopian Chaos Walking trilogy.  The third book, Monsters of Men, will be on sale at the end of September.

If straight fantasy is more their bag, have them try Robin McKinley’s Pegasus.  A true master of the fantastic, McKinley’s lyrical prose and engaging characterization never disappoints either the critics or teen fantasy aficionados.  For a little humor with your fantasy, you don’t want to miss out on the short story anthology Zombies vs. Unicorns.  Holly Black and Justine Larbalestier (Team Unicorn and Team Zombie, respectively) edit this collection with the hottest names in YA contributing horror, laughter, and romance—sometimes all in the same story.
