September is a great month to celebrate African-American innovation with two important patents made during this month. Prolific inventor Frederick M. Jones patented a control device for the internal combustion engine on September 2, 1958. This was just one of the more than 60 patents he registered in his life. Also, on September 19, 1893, Elbert R. Robinson patented the electric railway trolley, a revolutionary transportation device that is still in use today.
Great new Titles
Innovation is also evident in the arts, as multiple award-winning author Caryl Phillips returns with In the Falling Snow. Phillips’ novel is a deeply moving mix of race, class, and family issues that skillfully moves between past and present-day England to show a man on the brink of disaster. Also, Howard L. Bingham's Black Panthers 1968 documents the unprecedented access the Black Panthers granted Bingham to capture the organization for LIFE magazine. The accompanying article was never published, so this is the first time these photographs will see print.
