Celebrate the world of African-American music with two milestones in jazz music occurring this month. John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie, a pioneering jazz musician and composer, was born October 21, 1917. His contemporary, leading jazz musician Nat King Cole, became the first black performer to host his own television show on October 3, 1956.
Musical Reads
The musical theme continues with two new reads featuring African-American musicians. E-Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons shares his autobiography and musical legends with Big Man: Real Life and Tall Tales, a work that reveals his gift of storytelling. Also, the first full biography of this jazz great is presented in Robin D.G. Kelley's Thelonious Monk: The Life and Times of an American Original.
